People often say “IIT-JEE” as if it is one test. It is two. In this guide you will learn the difference between JEE Main vs JEE Advanced, see the same maths idea at both levels, and plan your route from the UAE.
Two steps to the IITs.
JEE Main → JEE Advanced
JEE Main vs JEE Advanced: what is the difference?
JEE Main is the first, wider test, and JEE Advanced is the second, harder test for the IITs. The National Testing Agency (NTA) runs JEE Main. Engineering institutes such as the NITs and IIITs use its results, and it also decides who can take JEE Advanced. Read our JEE Main maths guide for the 2027 dates in UAE time.
JEE Advanced is run by one of the IITs each year. In 2026 it was IIT Roorkee. Its rank is used for admission to the IITs.
In one line
JEE Main tests speed and accuracy. JEE Advanced tests depth of thinking.
JEE Main and JEE Advanced: key facts
JEE Main facts are for 2027. JEE Advanced facts are for 2026, because the 2027 rules are not out yet.
JEE Main paper
One 3-hour computer-based paper, with 25 maths questions.
JEE Advanced papers
Two 3-hour papers on one day. Both are compulsory.
Who goes on
The top 250,000 in JEE Main Paper 1 can take Advanced.
Advanced attempts
At most two, in two years in a row.
Facts checked on 2 November 2026 in the JEE (Main) 2027 Information Bulletin and on the official JEE (Advanced) 2026 website. Check both sites for updates.
How you move from JEE Main to JEE Advanced
Take JEE Main. In 2027 the sessions are in January and April. You can take one or both.
If your result in Paper 1 puts you in the top 250,000, you can register for JEE Advanced. In 2026 you also had to be born on or after 1 October 2001, with 5 more years for some groups.
Take JEE Advanced in May. In 2026 it was on 17 May. Paper 1 ran from 9:00 to 12:00 and Paper 2 from 14:30 to 17:30, Indian time. In UAE time, that is 7:30 to 10:30 and 13:00 to 16:00.
Your JEE Advanced rank is used for IIT seats. Your JEE Main result alone is used for NIT and IIIT seats.
Watch out!
Do not wait for your JEE Main result to start JEE Advanced practice. The gap between April and May is only a few weeks, and it is also close to final school assessments in the UAE. Prepare for the deeper Advanced questions from the start.
How the maths is different in JEE Main and JEE Advanced
Both tests use the same big areas of maths: algebra, calculus, coordinate geometry, vectors, trigonometry and probability. The difference is in the questions.
Question style
JEE Main uses multiple-choice questions with one right answer and questions with a number answer. JEE Advanced can also have questions with more than one right answer.
Length of each question
A JEE Main question usually tests one or two ideas. A JEE Advanced question often joins three or four ideas in one long chain.
Marking
JEE Main uses +4 for a right answer and −1 for a wrong one, in all questions. JEE Advanced does not publish its marking scheme early. You read it on screen on the test day, and some questions may have negative marks.
Basics still matter
Both tests need fast, exact basics: fractions, division with remainders and algebra without careless slips.
One idea, two levels: JEE Main-style and JEE Advanced-style questions
Here is the same maths idea at both levels, so you can see the jump. These are practice questions in the style of each test. They are not real past questions. Work each one out first, then tap to check.
Idea 1: turning points of a curve
Main-style: f(x) = x³ − 3x. Find f′(2).
f′(x) = 3x² − 3. So f′(2) = 12 − 3 = 9. One idea, one step.
Advanced-style (more than one answer can be right): f(x) = x³ − 3x. Which are true? (A) f has a local maximum at x = −1. (B) f has a local minimum at x = 1. (C) f(2) = 2. (D) f is increasing between x = −1 and x = 1.
f′(x) = 3x² − 3 = 0 at x = ±1, and f″(x) = 6x. At x = −1, f″ is negative, so it is a maximum. At x = 1, f″ is positive, so it is a minimum. f(2) = 8 − 6 = 2. Between −1 and 1, f′ is negative, so f is decreasing. The answer is A, B and C. You must check every option, because one slip loses the marks.
Idea 2: solving equations
Main-style: logâ‚‚ x + logâ‚‚ 8 = 5. Find x.
log₂ 8 = 3, so log₂ x = 2. That means x = 2² = 4.
Advanced-style (number answer): How many real numbers x solve |x² − 4| = 3?
Either x² − 4 = 3, so x = ±√7, or x² − 4 = −3, so x = ±1. That gives 4 solutions. The trap: many students forget the second case and answer 2.
How to prepare for JEE Main and JEE Advanced together
One plan can serve both tests if you build speed first and depth on top.
For JEE Main: speed
Practise many short questions against the clock. Aim to solve standard questions quickly and without slips.
For JEE Advanced: depth
Spend time on long, multi-step problems. After each one, write down the key idea that unlocked it.
For an unknown format: habits
The Advanced question types and marking can change each year. Practise three habits: read the marking rules on screen first, check every option in multi-answer questions, and skip a question you cannot narrow down.
For students in the UAE
In 2026, JEE Advanced had two test centres outside India: Abu Dhabi and Kathmandu. Dubai was not on the list. JEE Main had UAE centres too. Centre lists can change each year, so check the official sites before you register.
Questions people ask about JEE Main vs JEE Advanced
What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main is the first, wider test run by the NTA. JEE Advanced is the second, harder test run by an IIT each year, and its rank is used for IIT admission.
Who can take JEE Advanced?
For 2026, the top 250,000 candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 could take JEE Advanced, if they also met the age and other rules. You get at most two attempts, in two years in a row.
Is JEE Advanced maths harder than JEE Main maths?
Most students find it harder. The topics are similar, but JEE Advanced questions are longer, join more ideas together and can have more than one right answer.
Is the JEE Advanced marking scheme known before the test?
No. The marking rules are shown on screen on the test day, and some questions may have negative marks. Read them before you start answering.
Is there a JEE Advanced test centre in the UAE?
In 2026, Abu Dhabi was one of two centres outside India. Dubai was not on the list. Check the official JEE Advanced site for the current year.
Do I need to clear JEE Main to take JEE Advanced?
Yes. Only candidates who rank in the top 250,000 in JEE Main Paper 1 can register for JEE Advanced.
