What is JEE Main, and why does the maths matter?
JEE Main is the national engineering entrance test of India, and maths is one third of it. The National Testing Agency (NTA) runs it. Engineering institutes such as the NITs and IIITs use JEE Main results for admission.
JEE Main is also the first step to the IITs. Only the top scorers in JEE Main can take the second test, JEE Advanced. Read how JEE Main and JEE Advanced maths are different.

JEE Main 2027 dates in UAE time
The official dates are in Indian time (IST). UAE time is 1 hour 30 minutes behind IST. So a 9:00 start in India is a 7:30 start in Dubai.
Session 1: apply by 22 November 2026
The form is open from 24 October to 22 November 2026. Test days: 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 and 28 January 2027.
Session 2: apply 5 January to 3 February 2027
Test days: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 April 2027.
Shift times in UAE time
Morning shift: 7:30 to 10:30 (9:00 to 12:00 IST). Afternoon shift: 13:30 to 16:30 (15:00 to 18:00 IST).
Test cities
If you live outside India, you must also choose at least one test city in India on the form. Check the official city list for UAE cities before you apply.
Plan with the school year
Session 1 comes soon after the winter break, so use the break for full practice papers. Session 2 in early April is a second chance. If you take both, NTA uses your better score.
How the JEE Main maths part works
Section A has 20 multiple-choice questions. Each has 4 options and one right answer.
Section B has 5 questions where you type a number as the answer. There is no choice: all 5 count.
In both sections, a right answer gives you +4 marks and a wrong answer costs 1 mark. A question you leave blank gives 0.
You have 3 hours for all three subjects. If you split the time equally, you have 60 minutes for 25 maths questions, about 2 minutes 24 seconds each.
Watch out: when to guess
In a multiple-choice question, if you can cut the options down to 2, a guess gains 1.5 marks on average: half the time +4, half the time −1. A wild guess on all 4 options gains only 0.25 marks on average. In Section B, a guessed number is almost always wrong and costs 1 mark. So do not guess a number answer.
The maths in JEE Main
JEE Main maths covers four big areas. Many questions mix two or more of them.
Algebra
Quadratic equations, complex numbers, matrices, sequences, permutations and the binomial theorem. Dividing polynomials uses the same quotient and remainder idea you met with numbers.
Calculus
Limits, derivatives, integrals and differential equations. This area often gives a big share of the marks.
Coordinate geometry and vectors
Straight lines, circles, parabolas, ellipses, vectors and 3D geometry.
Trigonometry, statistics and probability
Trigonometric identities, mean and spread of data, and chance. Fractions appear in almost every probability answer.
JEE-style maths practice questions with answers
These are practice questions in the style of JEE Main. They are not real past questions. Work each one out first, then tap to check.
1. The roots of x² − 5x + 6 = 0 are α and β. Find α² + β².
α + β = 5 and αβ = 6. So α² + β² = (α + β)² − 2αβ = 25 − 12 = 13.
2. In how many ways can you arrange the letters of the word DUBAI?
The 5 letters are all different, so the answer is 5! = 5 × 4 × 3 × 2 × 1 = 120.
3. f(x) = x³ − 3x. Find f′(2).
f′(x) = 3x² − 3. So f′(2) = 12 − 3 = 9.
4. Find the integral of x(1 − x) from x = 0 to x = 1.
x(1 − x) = x − x². The integral is [x²/2 − x³/3] from 0 to 1 = 1/2 − 1/3 = 1/6.
5. Number-answer style: how many 3-digit numbers can you make with the digits 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 if no digit repeats?
5 choices for the first digit, 4 for the second and 3 for the third: 5 × 4 × 3 = 60. In Section B you type 60. No options help you, so check your working.
How to prepare for JEE Main maths from the UAE
Good JEE Main maths comes from steady practice over many months, not from a last-minute rush.
Build strong basics first
Algebra and calculus support almost every other area. Make sure you can do them fast and without mistakes before you move to mixed questions.
Practise in the real shift time
The morning shift starts at 7:30 UAE time. In the last weeks, do some full 3-hour practice papers on a computer at that time, so your brain is ready early.
Learn from every mistake
After each paper, sort your mistakes: a gap in an idea, a slow method, or a careless slip. Each type needs a different fix.
Did you know?
In recent years, JEE Main has had test centres in the UAE, including Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. So many students here do not need to travel to India. The city list can change each year, so check it before you apply.

How many maths questions are in JEE Main?
There are 25 maths questions: 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 questions with a number answer. All 25 count, and the maths part is worth 100 marks.
Is there negative marking in JEE Main maths?
Yes. A right answer gives you 4 marks, and a wrong answer costs 1 mark in both sections, including the number-answer questions. A question you leave blank gives 0.
When is JEE Main 2027?
Session 1 is on 20 to 24 January and 28 January 2027. Session 2 is on 2 to 7 April 2027. The form for Session 1 closes on 22 November 2026.
What time does JEE Main start in the UAE?
The morning shift runs from 7:30 to 10:30 UAE time, and the afternoon shift from 13:30 to 16:30 UAE time. These are 9:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 18:00 in Indian time.
Can students in the UAE take JEE Main?
Yes. In recent years there have been JEE Main test centres in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. If you live outside India, you must also choose at least one test city in India on the form.
Is there an age limit for JEE Main?
No. The JEE (Main) 2027 bulletin says there is no age limit. JEE Advanced has its own age rule.
